Then again, since this melodrama takes place in Amsterdam, a town with almost as many canals as Venice, why should we be surprised that a murderer would swim from one killing to the next? A young woman's real talent gets her mixed up with crooks selling fake art treasures in this comedy for the whole family. Jo (Nina Petronzio) is a 13-year-old girl who loves to draw and has a very special talent -- she can sketch and paint in a style that bears a startling resemblance to the work of Vincent Van Gogh. Jo's talent has won her a grant to art school, but she also discovers it can earn her pocket money when a man in a coffee shop sees her sketching and offers to pay her to do some drawings for him. Jo agrees, but regrets her decision when she discovers she's unwittingly become part of an art counterfeiting ring -- her drawings are being as sold as Van Gogh originals, with customers lining up to pay the multimillion-dollar price tags! This 20 minute movie was the last of Verhoeven's shorts. It has the same super-ugly look (clashing, bleary colors, aggressively non-attractive people and compositions) that is characteristic of his early features, and the same raunchy bitterly ironic humor too. Made in 1970 - it is a typical (except anyone as talented as Verhoeven is never typical) example of swinging 60s sexual morality. Well paced, nicely amoral and with Verhoeven closet-fascist (I share his views entirely) disgust with the grossness and worthlessness of the age in which we live palpable beneath the surface. Wickedly, deadpan-ironic and confrontational as only Paul Verhoeven can be. All in all - it is a Paul Verhoeven picture and better in some ways than his early features - certainly better than the one about the Amsterdam hooker.

Wim Zomer

Willem (Wim) Zomer (Finsterwolde, 22 februari 1945) is een Nederlandse acteur, die onder andere te zien was in de televisieseriesSpijkerhoek en Goede tijden, slechte tijden.

Zomer speelde echter in 1969 al in de KRO-serie Tot de dood ons scheidt, waarin hij de rol van schoonzoon Ad vertolkte. Ook speelde hij in 1970 een kleine rol in de korte Paul Verhoeven-film De worstelaar.

Later dat jaar was Zomer weer te zien in een tv-serie De rare vogels, waarin onder andere ook Hans Boskamp en Jan Teulingsmeededen. Zomer speelde de rol van Ben. Twee jaar later speelde hij in de bekende tv-serie De graaf van Monte Cristo. Hierin speelde hij Fernand.

Daarna gingen er jaren overheen voordat Zomer weer een rol op televisie speelde. Pas in de actiefilm Amsterdamned uit 1988 was hij weer te zien. Hij speelde de rol van duiker John, naast onder andere Huub Stapel en Monique van de Ven. Deze Dick Maas-productie deed het goed, en een jaar later kreeg Zomer de rol van Nico Willems aangeboden in de soapserie Spijkerhoek. De serie liep tot 1993, maar Zomer speelde vanaf 1990 ook als Daniël in Goede tijden, slechte tijden. In 1999 hield Zomer het voor gezien.

Sinds december 1994 organiseert Wim Zomer jaarlijks het Apeldoornse Wintercircus. Ieder jaar in de periode rond Kerst en Oud & Nieuw staat een internationaal circusgezelschap op een vaste plek in Apeldoorn. De bezetting wisselt jaarlijks, maar is altijd van hoge kwaliteit.
